Mel demonstrates his unique equipment for reverse hyperextensions.

Exercise: Reverse Hyperextension Machine
Category: Supplemental
Muscles targeted: Glutes, lower back, and hamstrings

This exercise is regarded by many strength coaches as being the best lower back, hamstring, and glute exercise. This is because it allows you to train all these muscles in unison. This is important because the muscles of the posterior chain are the same muscles responsible for running and jumping.

This is performed on a special bench invented by Louie Simmons of Westside Barbell Club. This exercise is also being use for rehabilitation purposes for those with back problems or herniated disks. This is because the bench decompresses the disks when the weights are in the midpoint position. To perform this exercise, there is a strap that wraps around your ankles or you place your ankles between rollers. You jump on the bench with your face down. Your entire torso is supported by the bench. This allows for your legs to hang down at a 90 degree angle. You perform the movement by contracting your glutes and raising you legs up to a horizontal position.

At this point, you try to contract your glutes and lower back as tight as possible. Then you lower the weight past the 90 degree starting point to a position where your ankles are in alignment with your head. This is the point where the disks are stretched apart to allow fluid to enter the joints.

Sport Specific Training is a specialty program designed to make the client better at the sport they are playing. He or she wants that edge to give them the best chance of winning against their competitors or achieving a personal best. Parents can give their child a better chance of winning too. It can be done either on a One on One basis or as a Group of athletes/team mates/friends, playing the same sport.

We use David Sandler, of Strength Pro, as a trainer and special consultant to our program. David is the former Strength and Conditioning Coach of the Miami Hurricanes during their National Championship years and now consults for pro and collegiate athletes. He is also a special consultant for Fox Sport’s Sport Science Television Show and The Discovery Channel’s Fight Science Television Show. He also serves as head of the Arnold Schwarzenegger Strength Training Summit held annually in Columbus, Ohio. Train with a master trainer of trainers, a proven strength and conditioning coach who can take you from a high school or college athlete to a professional athlete!

Whether you are training for a sports combine, trying to get in shape for your collegiate or high school season, or just trying to improve your weekend tennis game, we have the right program to get you where you need to be to perform at the top of your game.

You will be working one on one with a coach that will design a specific program for your sport, position, and skill level. Here is a partial list of the things you will be involved in:

◊ Increased Vertical Jump

◊ Improved Running Mechanics For Faster Sprint Times

◊ Agility Training For Quick Feet, Direction Change and Body Position

◊ Sport and Position Specific Conditioning

◊ Improved Linear & Lateral Speed

◊ Decreased Chance of Injury

◊ Medicine Ball, Plyometric, Core Strength Training

◊ Balance & Coordination Training

For the high-end athlete, we can do blood lactic acid measurements, high speed video analysis, electromyography, and other specific analyses further detailed in our “Scientific Athletic Performance Testing and Training By David Sandler of “Sport Science” by Fox Sports” section.

Youth Speed, Agility, Strength and Conditioning, an offshoot of our Sport Specific Training, is designed to instruct older children and young adults the fundamentals of working out to get faster, more agile, stronger and have more endurance, so that they can play sports better and raise their level of fitness. As an added benefit, these students end up looking better, feeling better about themselves and having increased self esteem and self confidence. This may be just the thing they need to have an easier time coping with the pressures of growing up and attending middle school and high school. Class sizes will be limited so that we can insure students get the attention they deserve so they can learn properly. Remember, it only takes a few repetitions to learn to do something incorrectly and have that pattern ingrained in your brain and neuromuscular pathways. Unlearning the wrong way of doing something however, can take hundreds or even thousands of correct repetitions. So learn to do it right the first time!

Below is Gerry working with a Western High School Football Player on improving the eccentric loading portion of his jump. This is very important for overall athletic performance because in sports, it not only matters how high you jump, but how fast you jump and how fast after a jump you can jump again. Think about suddenly stopping on a pass route and immediately jumping for the football. Or going for a rebound against another player and you both miss. First one back up gets the ball!

The Revolution Training Program is in a class format of up to ten people. It is designed and implemented by one of our personal trainers, who will see that you do all exercises correctly and that you are pushed to your limits. The energy is kept up by the trainer and his motivation and the high energy music pumping through our sound system.

It incorporates resistance training, cardiovascular training, plyometrics, core and flexibility work at the same time. You go from one station to the next, no rest, no conversations, just a hard, but fun workout. The stations may be a Cybex weight machine, free weights, a Spin bike, a running in place rebounder, a jump rope, a plyometric platform, etc. We are always changing the program to insure that your body doesn’t adapt to it and benefits just keep on coming. It is designed to work all aspects needed to improve ones over-all physical conditioning in a time efficient, affordable manner. Try the first session for free. Come with a friend or co-worker. It’s a great team builder.

by Mel Fabros

Scientific Athlete Performance Testing is designed to test the limits of athletes’ performances and capabilities and is offered at Bodysport. We utilize the services of David Sandler and Strength Pro. David is the genius behind Fox Sport’s “Sport Science” and the Discovery Channel’s “Fight Science“. With his advanced testing equipment and procedures, he will not only measure your strengths and weaknesses, he can help prescribe the correct training protocols to correct them! You can have David or the trainers here at Bodysport use this information to optimally train you. Or you can take the results to your trainer and have him/her use them to formulate a better training program for you.

Correct exercise prescription is key to an athlete performing to his maximum capability and in preventing injury. For example, is an athlete so quadricep strength dominant that the difference in strength compared to his hamstring presents the danger of ACL and MCL knee problems? Or will the same condition make that athlete susceptible to hamstring strains or even tearing?

Another example would be vertical leap. Many athletes have great vertical leap height, but are they exploding fast enough to get to that height as soon as possible? Is the athlete deficient in the eccentric or concentric portion of the lift? In sports, where the difference of being on or out of the play can be .01 second, the athlete and his trainer needs to know and David can tell you.

Are you looking to test yourself, a product, or a team? Are you interested in developing specific tests and collect vital information on your clients? Or do you just want someone to help you look over facts, crunch numbers, and help with data interpretation? Strength Pro’s team of experts have consulted for groups like National Geographic, Discovery, Fox Sports, and several MLB, NBA, NFL and NHL franchises. As well, Strength Pro serves on many scientific advisory boards providing research and testing information to many other organizations.

Here is a brief list of our advanced testing capabilities. While some of these tests may seem intimidating, all you need to know is that when David tests you, he will find your strengths and weaknesses, tell you WHY you are weak in those areas, and more importantly, prescribe the exact exercise routine based on scientific data, not objective observations with the naked eye, TO CORRECT those weaknesses. Is it worth it? When college scholarships worth tens even hundreds of thousands of dollars and million dollar professional athlete and endorsement contracts can come down to tenths of a second on the playing field, you bet it is!!!

Massage isn’t just an amenity to make you feel good, but can actually help you recover faster from workouts and prevent injuries! Let’s face it; we push our bodies to the limit every day. I’ve trained with Bodysport for the last year and know just how beat up your body feels on a daily basis. Overusing your muscles like this may often create problems and imbalances in the soft tissues. A constant build up of tension in the muscles may lead to stresses on joints, ligaments, tendons, as well as the muscles themselves. The muscles tighten and shorten over time leaving you vulnerable to strains and tears. If these are ignored, they will hinder your rate of improvement, impede performance, and ultimately make you susceptible to injury.

Massage is the most effective therapy for releasing muscle tension and restoring balance to the muscular-skeletal system. More specifically, sports massage which targets deeper tissues. It treats problems before they are too obvious. When giving you a massage, we can feel the variations in the tissues and use different techniques to restore muscles back to a healthier, supple state. Regular massage as part of your training program will keep your muscles loose and flexible and therefore helping to prevent injury.

Obesity linked to stupidity, brain scans show
by Kate Melville

A person’s risk of cardiovascular disease, type II diabetes and hypertension is known to be linked to obesity, and now researchers have established that being overweight can also affect a person’s brain.

In the journal Human Brain Mapping, Paul Thompson, a UCLA professor of neurology, and colleagues compared the brains of people who were obese, overweight, and of normal weight, to see if they had differences in brain structure. They found that obese people had 8 percent less brain tissue than people with normal weight, while overweight people had 4 percent less tissue.

“That’s a big loss of tissue and it depletes your cognitive reserves, putting you at much greater risk of Alzheimer’s and other diseases that attack the brain,” noted Thompson. “But you can greatly reduce your risk for Alzheimer’s, if you can eat healthily and keep your weight under control.”

The new study used brain images from an earlier study known as the Cardiovascular Health Study Cognition Study. The researchers converted the scans into detailed three-dimensional images using tensor-based morphometry, a neuroimaging method that offers high resolution mapping of anatomical differences in the brain.

In looking at both grey matter and white matter of the brain, the researchers found that the people defined as obese had lost brain tissue in the frontal and temporal lobes, areas of the brain critical for planning and memory, and in the anterior cingulate gyrus (attention and executive functions), hippocampus (long term memory) and basal ganglia (movement).

Overweight people showed brain loss in the basal ganglia, the corona radiata, white matter comprised of axons, and the parietal lobe (sensory lobe).

“The brains of obese people looked 16 years older than the brains of those who were lean, and in overweight people looked eight years older,” said Thompson.

“Along with increased risk for health problems such as type 2 diabetes and heart disease, obesity is bad for your brain: we have linked it to shrinkage of brain areas that are also targeted by Alzheimer’s,” added co-researcher Cyrus A. Raji. “But that could mean exercising, eating right and keeping weight under control can maintain brain health with aging.”

by Mel Fabros

We have some of the best personal trainers in Las Vegas, Nevada! Stop by our gym and get to know the staff.

We are dedicated to providing you with the best quality service in the industry. Your goals are our goals. Come see us today!

Personal trainers aren’t for everyone, but a trainer provides certain benefits that you can’t find when working out on your own. Here are ten reasons a personal trainer may be right for you.

Motivation
One of the main reasons people benefit from a personal trainer is that they loss motivation to stick with a consistent exercise program. Certified personal trainers can provide structure and accountability, and help you develop a lifestyle that encourages health.

Individualized program
If you have any chronic health conditions, injuries or training goals (running a marathon, for example) a trainer will work with you and your health care provider to plan a safe, efficient program that considers these needs and enable you to reach your health goals.

Efficiency
Personal Trainers help you focus on results and stop wasting your time doing inefficient workouts. A personal trainer has a plan and will help you get maximum results in minimum time.

Improve technical skills
If you play a particular sport, the right personal trainer will help you improve your skill by showing you new training techniques specific to your sport. The Trainer will incorporate skills training into your program so you improve not only your strength and endurance, but your agility and mental focus as well.

You are new to exercise
If you are an absolute beginner, a personal trainer is the ultimate fitness coach. A good trainer will introduce you to a very simple, effective routine and build efficiently so before you know it, you have the confidence and knowledge to decide what is right for you.

Break through plateaus
Ok, you are already in pretty decent shape, but you’ve been there for years. If you are stuck in the same routine and want to break out of a rut, a personal trainer is the perfect solution. A trainer will jump start, not only your motivation, but your routine as well.

Learn how to go it alone
If you ultimately want to learn all the facets of designing your own routines so you don’t need to use a personal trainer, going for a few months may be all you need. All good personal trainers will teach you the basics of building and modifying a fitness program to achieve maximum results.

Workout Safely
A personal trainer watches your form, monitors your vitals and can provide objective feedback about your limits and strengths. Most of us tend to ignore some of the subtle signals our body provides. We either push through pain or give up too soon. Because a personal trainer can watch what you are doing while you are doing it, they can help push you or slow you down as necessary.

Workout at home
Many personal trainers make house calls. If you don’t have the type or interest in going to a gym, but have a hard time knowing what to do on your own at home, a personal trainer can bring fitness into your living room.

Lose Weight
There is a good reason that the number one reason people hire personal trainers is to lose weight and get into shape — it works. If you made a resolution to lose the fat and build the muscle, a trainer can keep you on track and help you realize that goal.

If you feel you’re a person that needs a lot of motivation and support to get started working out and eating properly, then grab a friend or two and start a program together! When one is tired the other can motivate the other to get going. Also, when it comes to changing nutritional habits, you’re usually away from our watchful eyes and we can’t hold you accountable. So, it’s easier when two people do it together.

Finally, the partners split the training costs so it much more affordable! Find a partner and call us today to schedule a partner program consultation to start down the road to getting healthier and looking better, together.

Mel graduated from the University of California at Berkeley in 1989. He originally thought he wanted to be a doctor, so he took all the prerequisite biology, anatomy, physiology, kinesiology, and chemistry classes. Circumstances change and thinking he wanted to be a lawyer, he ended up with a degree in Political Science with a minor in Legal Studies. After graduation, he didn’t want to go to law school immediately, so he worked in retail security and private investigations and protection for six years.

Wanting to do something he loved and being a serious workout aficionado since he was 16, he got his American Council of Exercise Certification and became a personal trainer in 1995. As a trainer, he originally worked at Move It!, a private personal training center in Los Gatos, California. He worked there until he and his partner Ron Manicki, opened their own private personal training facility, The Fitness Group of Los Gatos, in 1997. While in Los Gatos, Mel worked with several professional athletes, including Peggy Fleming, Olympic Gold Medalist Skater and Ron Stern, hockey player for the San Jose Sharks. He also worked with numerous housewives and “soccer moms” who wanted to lose fat and tone muscle, geriatric clients who wanted to turn back the clock by exercising, busy executives who wanted efficient workout programs to fit into their busy schedules, middle school and high school students who wanted to be more athletic and be better at the sport they played, etc. By far, his proudest achievement has been to work with clients diagnosed with high blood pressure and diabetes and putting them on sensible exercise and nutrition plans, improving their health to the point where they were taken off their medicine or the dosage was drastically reduced.

He moved to Las Vegas with his family at the end of 2003 and opened Bodysport Fitness Center along with his brother Gerry in October of 2006. To expand his knowledge on training for his clients, he is currently working on getting his National Academy of Sport Medicine Personal Training Certification.
