Can a stroll help ease depression? That question preoccupied Dr. Madhukar H. Trivedi, a professor of psychiatry at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, after several of his patients, all suffering from serious depression, mentioned that they felt happier if they went for a walk. The patients in question were taking the widely prescribed antidepressants known as S.S.R.I.’s, for selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, but not responding fully. They remained, by clinical standards, depressed. Dr. Trivedi and his colleagues began to wonder if adding a formal “dose” of exercise would increase their chances of getting better.
Certainly the possibility was worth investigating. Clinical depression, as anyone who has experienced or watched a loved one struggle with the condition knows, can be stubbornly intractable. Even if patients have been taking an antidepressant for months, recovery rates tend to hover below 50 percent.
In order to increase the odds of improvement, doctors frequently add a second treatment — often another drug, like lithium or an antipsychotic — to the S.S.R.I. regimen at some point, Dr. Trivedi said. Most patients ultimately require at least two concurrent treatments to achieve remission of their depression, he said. Studies have shown that these secondary drug treatments help an additional 20 to 30 percent of depressed patients to improve, but the medications can be expensive and have unpleasant side effects.
Which prompted Dr. Trivedi to look to exercise. His investigation joins a growing movement among some physiologists and doctors to consider and study exercise as a formal medicine, with patients given a prescription and their progress monitored, as it would be if they were prescribed a pill.

I caught this video of a guy who says he will live the life of “the healthiest man alive” for the year 2011. Here’s an excerpt from cnn.com:
Author A.J. Jacobs’ books include “The Know-it-All,” “My Life as an Experiment” and “The Year of Living Biblically.” For the last, he spent a year trying to follow every rule and guideline in the Bible – more than 700 of them. In his current project, he’s trying to follow every piece of verified health advice that he can find, testing everything from barefoot running to calorie restriction diets. He sat down with me to talk about his goal of being “The Healthiest Person Alive.”
Interesting what he’s doing and documenting. Only thing is I wonder about the usefulness of it all. I mean, if he wanted to know what diets or exercises can truly make a difference, then he should implement one at a time and test to see if there are any positive changes. I mean, doing everything you’re told by just anyone who thinks they’re an expert.. well.. if you have no common sense, no background in diet and exercise, then you can allow yourself to grow crazy by trying to do half of what people tell you to do.. which is 70-80% bullshit anyways! Your local Las Vegas Personal Trainer at your service here. Ever wonder why you go to the gym, work out, drink your protein shake, go out to the club for 7 hours, sleep, drunk for 5, then go to work hung over and not get that six pack you want before summer? Well, I don’t. Because I know why you aren’t getting that six pack. You think you are eating right, doing the right things, but most likely, you aren’t. Think about it. Are you leaving the gym, drenched in sweat from your weight workout? Are you getting a variety of whole, nutritious, colorful foods? Do you get enough sleep? Are you limiting your alcohol intake? Most likely, if you aren’t seeing results, most of these questions will be answered with a word you tell little kids when they are trying to eat crayons. NO. Let’s talk about that first question. Do your weight training sessions leave you tired, sweaty and dunzo? If not, you probably aren’t doing all that much to get those precious muscles you want, or that pretty tone that all the ladies are looking for. I see tons of people go into the gym, spend an hour or two in there, and come out looking like they just got done watching a movie. The gym is where it all happens. You work on your fitness, and try to do better each and every time out. If you do the same old thing, that isn’t challenging, why do you think you’d get results from that? If I ran into a brick wall, 100 times in a row, and didn’t run through it, what would make me think that the 101st time, I would actually make it through? The answer is not genius. Anyway. My point is, you have to actively challenge yourself in the gym, or you aren’t going anywhere. You won’t be in any better shape, you won’t see a six pack, if you do the same old exercises, the same old way, with the same old weight. You have to do things that you think you might not be able to do. It’s the only way to get better. Practice your deficiencies, and reap the results.

As a personal trainer, I hear everything. Living in Las Vegas, bascially multiplies that statement. People come to me, wanting to work out for various reasons. And here are a few.
Maybe you work out to feel better. For most people, this isn’t the reason. I usually get this from people who lack energy, or are losing their once amazing shape. They realize that working out gives them a sense of dedication, and that alone may raise some peoples spirits. Personally, when I don’t get in my exercise, I am not in the best mood. I also feel like I’m not doing what i should be, which in turn, puts me in a bad mood. Also, some people are stuck at desks all day long, and working out, even just walking on a treadmill, can do wonders for how your day goes. (more…)

Being a Personal Trainer, I get asked a lot of workout questions, nutrition advice, the best way to burn fat etc. I also get a lot of excuses, as to why the people asking me the questions, aren’t doing the answers i am saying. They don’t have the money to buy the right foods. They are always on the go so they can’t take fruits and veggies with them. They are starting back up next week. The list goes on and on. The one thing that bothers me the most, which is a HUGE copout, is they don’t have any time. Really? Come on. I believe everybody on this planet, unless you are some sort of Doc Brown time traveler, or a wizard, has the same 24 hours in a day, 7 days a week. (more…)
