WASHINGTON, Jan. 31, 2011 — US Department of Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack and Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius announced the release of the 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans, the federal government’s evidence-based nutritional guidance to promote health, reduce the risk of chronic diseases, and reduce the prevalence of overweight and obesity through improved nutrition and physical activity.

The 2010 update places a stronger emphasis on reducing consumption of particular foods and food components. Here is a brief summary of highlights:
I agree with the following assessments:
- Reduce sodium to less than 2,300 milligrams (mg) per day, with an even further reduction to 1,500 mg per day for about half the population, including African Americans, all adults 51 and older, and those with hypertension, diabetes or chronic kidney disease.
- Consume less saturated fat by replacing it with unsaturated fats. Avoiding trans fat remains a key recommendation.
- Reduce intake of solid fats and added sugars.
- Limit intake of refined grains, especially those with added sugar, fat and sodium. (more…)

I caught this video of a guy who says he will live the life of “the healthiest man alive” for the year 2011. Here’s an excerpt from cnn.com:
Author A.J. Jacobs’ books include “The Know-it-All,” “My Life as an Experiment” and “The Year of Living Biblically.” For the last, he spent a year trying to follow every rule and guideline in the Bible – more than 700 of them. In his current project, he’s trying to follow every piece of verified health advice that he can find, testing everything from barefoot running to calorie restriction diets. He sat down with me to talk about his goal of being “The Healthiest Person Alive.”
Interesting what he’s doing and documenting. Only thing is I wonder about the usefulness of it all. I mean, if he wanted to know what diets or exercises can truly make a difference, then he should implement one at a time and test to see if there are any positive changes. I mean, doing everything you’re told by just anyone who thinks they’re an expert.. well.. if you have no common sense, no background in diet and exercise, then you can allow yourself to grow crazy by trying to do half of what people tell you to do.. which is 70-80% bullshit anyways! Want fresh/purified water at a fraction of the cost? Ask me about Culligan water. I only pay $25 a month and I have unlimited pure water flowing fresh from my sink!
I have a great hookup named William that I can introduce you to. I didn’t pay any setup/installation costs and there is NO CONTRACT to sign! Good stuff..
I used to use a bottle delivery service (sparkletts).. but they were expensive, had problems with delivery and over-charging me.. and when I ran out of water, that was that! With Culligan, I never have to worry about running out of water..
I use the water for everything.. drinking, cooking, cleaning food, for my pets, you name it!
